Chapter Statuses

Home Chapter Statuses

Below you will find the recognition status of all of our recognized fraternities and sororities at the University of Maryland. In keeping with the Vice President’s expectation that sororities and fraternities be responsibly managed and participate as constructive members of the community, as a general rule, recognition will not be granted unless the sorority or fraternity chapter:

  • Is a registered student organization with the University’s Office of Campus Programs;
  • Has a minimum of five (5) currently enrolled University of Maryland, College Park, undergraduate student members;
  • Is in good standing with its International or National Headquarters. Newly chartered chapters without an inter/national infrastructure may be exempted from this requirement at the discretion of the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life (DFSL) on a case-by-case basis;
  • Is accepted by one of the four governing councils: the Interfraternity Council, the Pan-Hellenic Council, the Panhellenic Association, or the Multicultural Greek Council, unless exempted from this requirement at the discretion of the DFSL on a case-by-case basis;
  • Has reasonably complied with the University of Maryland Chapter Expectations established by the Vice President and the DFSL. New sororities and fraternities must demonstrate a capacity to meet these requirements.

The Chapter statuses are defined as:

  • Recognized: A recognized chapter is a fraternity or sorority that is in good standing with the University of Maryland and Fraternity and Sorority Life. Recognized organizations have completed all required university processes and meet the expectations outlined in the university’s relationship agreement with fraternities and sororities. Recognized chapters are permitted to fully participate in campus activities, including recruitment or intake, events, and council operations, and are eligible for university resources, advising, and recognition programs.
  • Probationary Recognition: A chapter on probationary recognition remains recognized by the university but has been placed on a temporary status due to concerns related to policy compliance, risk management, or alignment with university expectations. During probationary recognition, chapters may be required to complete specific educational, organizational, or corrective actions and may have limitations on certain activities. This status is intended to support improvement and ensure the organization can return to full recognition.
  • Seeking Recognition: A group with seeking recognition status is an organization that is in the process of establishing itself as a recognized fraternity or sorority at the University of Maryland. These organizations are working with Fraternity and Sorority Life to meet the requirements for recognition, which may include demonstrating organizational structure, aligning with university policies, and building a sustainable membership base (the Student Organization Resource Center requires groups have a minimum of 5 members before they are recognized). Groups in this stage may have limited privileges until the recognition process is completed.
  • Unrecognized: An unrecognized organization is not recognized by the University of Maryland and therefore does not have an official relationship with Fraternity and Sorority Life or the university. Unrecognized groups may not represent themselves as a university-recognized fraternity or sorority, participate in council activities, recruit members, or access university resources associated with recognized student organizations. Oftentimes, unrecognized groups have been removed from the university for conduct-related reasons.

Unrecognized Chapters

WARNING: Some organizations that were once recognized fraternities or sororities on campus continue to operate underground despite having lost recognition from the University.

These organizations have had their recognition revoked by the institution for various reasons, including such things as hazing, alcohol and drug abuse, risk management violations, and failure to comply with University policies and expectations. These organizations have, in almost all cases, also had their charter suspended by their international organization because they were not upholding fraternal values and were engaging in risky behaviors that endangered the members and other students. The following groups have lost recognition and have not been approved to return to campus:

  • Delta Chi Fraternity
  • Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Inc.
  • Tau Kappa Epsilon
  • Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
  • Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc.
  • Delta Tau Delta
  • Pi Kappa Phi
  • Alpha Epsilon Pi
  • Pi Kappa Alpha (suspended through 2026)
  • Delta Epsilon Psi Fraternity, Inc. (suspended through 2029)
