Thanksgiving & Spring Break
All Move-in, Move-out, and Holiday Break Procedures will be coordinated by the Resident Director/House Director with cooperation from the House Corporation and Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life policies and procedures. As you leave for Thanksgiving/Spring Break please make sure you have done the following:
- Take out all trash, recycling, and compostable items to the appropriate outside receptacle.
- Close and lock the windows in your room.
- Turn off all lights and set your AC Unit to Low.
- Ensure you have your room key and UID so you will be able to get back in uneventfully upon your return.
- Unplug all unnecessary appliances (TVs, Clocks, Grooming appliances).
- Check Dining Room Fridge (dispose of all produce and late plates).
- Update your RD on when you are departing for the break.
Winter Break
All Move-in, Move-out, and Holiday Break Procedures will be coordinated by the Resident Director/House Director with cooperation from the House Corporation and Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life policies and procedures.

Residence Hall Release to Chapter Housing
This process applies to students moving from University residence halls into University-owned chapter houses on the Graham Cracker or Fraternity Row for Spring 2027.
All Petitions for Release are subject to Resident Life approval after review and verification of the supplied information. Submitting a petition does not guarantee approval. Do not sign a chapter house contract until Resident Life approves your Petition for Release, so you can avoid financial obligations to two housing entities.
- Submit your Petition for Release by December 1, 2026, through starrez.umd.edu to meet preferred release option status. Chances for release are greatly reduced for students who miss this deadline.
- Select Greek Housing as the reason for release and provide your organization’s name on the petition.
- Provide an individual letter on chapter letterhead stating your intention to move into the chapter house. Chapter presidents: provide a letter to Resident Life that each member can submit with their petition. A PDF may be printed or attached to the electronic petition.
- If approved, vacate your residence hall assignment at the end of Fall 2026, no later than 7 p.m. on December 21, 2026.
- By the first day of Spring 2027 classes, Resident Life will confirm that released students have entered into leases with the University-owned chapter houses. Students who have not will be reassigned to a residence hall space and will remain responsible for their original 2026–2027 housing contract.
Requests received after December 1, 2026 do not meet preferred release option status. Resident Life will strictly adhere to its cancellation policies and review late requests case by case. Approved requests may be subject to financial penalties under the Terms and Conditions.
