NPHC Intake & Recruitment

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) at the University of Maryland represents historically Black fraternities and sororities, also known as the “Divine Nine.” These organizations were founded at a time when Black students were denied access to many campus activities and organizations, including historically white fraternities and sororities. Today, they continue to uphold traditions of academic excellence, cultural empowerment, service, leadership, and social justice.

The NPHC does not facilitate a structured or collaborative recruitment process. Each organization conducts its own membership intake process at various points throughout the academic year.  Organizations require discretion during their intake or new member education processes, in accordance with their national policies and cultural traditions. Because of this, prospective members should explore the individual organizations and learn about what makes each one distinct. This means that timelines, requirements, and procedures may vary by chapter and national organization.

To explore membership in an NPHC organization, prospective members are encouraged to:

  • Attend NPHC and chapter-sponsored events such as NPHC 101, informational panels, or community service programs
  • Learn about each chapter’s history, mission, and values
  • Visit national organization websites to understand the requirements of membership
  • Connect with chapter members to express your interest and ask questions
  • Follow chapter's social media or campus flyers for announcements about interest meetings or upcoming intake

Whether you are seeking a strong sense of tradition, a powerful network of alumni, or a commitment to uplifting the Black community, joining an NPHC organization offers a deeply meaningful and lifelong experience. You can express interest in joining an NPHC chapter through the NPHC Interest Form.
