The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life annually hosts the Fraternity and Sorority Leadership Awards to recognize the accomplishments of our students and chapters. Awards are given out in the following categories:

The University of Maryland has had a long and rich relationship with its collegiate fraternities and sororities stretching back more than 100 years. As an important component of the co-curricular programs for undergraduate students, fraternities and sororities have supported the central mission of the University by providing an enriched out-of-class living/learning experience since they were first founded here on campus back in 1913. These groups are characterized by a tradition of involvement and leadership in campus life.

The University of Maryland owns 21 properties that are leased to Fraternity and Sorority alumni corporations for use by their members. Some of those chapters make their houses available for use during the summer months. Inquiries can be made to Stephanie Patterson, Assistant Director of Housing in the Department of Fraternity & Sorority Life (301-314-1987) or spatter2@umd.edu.

Each house has similarities in terms of layout yet many differences that set them each apart. Here is some other basic information:

Welcome to the Chapter Housing Guide!

The Agora, located at #4 Fraternity Row, is a non-residential facility for use as a student services/programming space by undergraduate student members of fraternities and sororities with membership in the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). The space is exclusively for members of MGC & NPHC organizations and their guests.

Below you will find the recognition status of all of our recognized fraternities and sororities at the University of Maryland. In keeping with the Vice President’s expectation that sororities and fraternities be responsibly managed and participate as constructive members of the community, as a general rule, recognition will not be granted unless the sorority or fraternity chapter:

Academic excellence is a key pillar shared by the sororities and fraternities recognized by the University of Maryland. All of our chapters have minimum GPA standards for their new and initiated members, and the university requires a 2.5 GPA and 12 credit hours to join a sorority or fraternity.

Each semester, the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life prepares an Academic Standing Report to emphasize the importance of academic excellence within our community. You can access the most recent Academic Standing Reports below.

The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life, in conjunction with members of the four governing councils, provides educational and leadership programming on a variety of topic areas throughout the semester. We believe in the transformative nature of fraternities and sororities, and providing members with opportunities to learn, dialogue, and facilitate personal development is a primary goal of our staff and student leaders.

With more than 50 recognized organizations, Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) at the University of Maryland is a vibrant community built on shared values of scholarship, leadership, service, and brotherhood/sisterhood.

Our community is made up of four governing councils, each with its own rich history, traditions, and areas of emphasis. Explore each council below to learn more about their member chapters, recruitment or intake processes, and leadership opportunities:

Fraternity and sorority housing at the University of Maryland offers a unique living experience for students who want to build strong connections within their chapters and the broader fraternity and sorority community. These environments provide opportunities for leadership development, academic support, and meaningful traditions while fostering a sense of belonging. Currently, the University of Maryland leases chapter houses on Fraternity Row and the Graham Cracker, and other chapters lease or own private residences in Old Town.
