The University of Maryland is host to the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), which is composed of the nine historically Black Greek-Letter Organizations. Affectionately known as the "Divine Nine or D9," eight of the nine chapters are currently active on the campus. Each of these organizations was founded during a time when Black students were systematically denied access to higher education and excluded from full participation in campus life at many institutions, particularly land-grant universities like the University of Maryland.
The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life (DFSL) staff is committed to providing support to chapters through consistent and intentional conversations about personal and organizational well-being. Each chapter is assigned to a staff member who serves as their chapter coach. Chapter Presidents must meet monthly with their Chapter Coach. These meetings provide the President with personal support as well as support planning programs, addressing member concerns and risk management issues, and communicating with other stakeholders.
The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life is committed to providing a high level of support for the fraternity and sorority chapters and members with whom we work. A key component of the work we do is our partnership and collaboration with inter/national organizations, volunteers, and chapter advisors. The role of the chapter advisor is extremely important, and we are committed to supporting you as you work with students on our campus.
