Academic Standing Report

Academic excellence is a key pillar shared by the sororities and fraternities recognized by the University of Maryland. All of our chapters have minimum GPA standards for their new and initiated members, and the university requires a 2.5 GPA and 12 credit hours to join a sorority or fraternity.

Each semester, the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life prepares an Academic Standing Report to emphasize the importance of academic excellence within our community. You can access the most recent Academic Standing Reports below.

Programs

The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life, in conjunction with members of the four governing councils, provides educational and leadership programming on a variety of topic areas throughout the semester. We believe in the transformative nature of fraternities and sororities, and providing members with opportunities to learn, dialogue, and facilitate personal development is a primary goal of our staff and student leaders.

Chapter Expectations

In the early 1990s, the University began to look at ways in which fraternity and sorority chapters could enhance the types of programming offered to members. After drawing input from students, campus faculty and staff, as well as fraternity and sorority professionals from across the nation, the University proposed the implementation of a program centered on the concept of helping chapters return to the values upon which they were founded. Implemented in 1995, the Foundation for the Future (aka The Maryland Plan) document charted a new path for Greek students at the University of Maryland.
