The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) at the University of Maryland represents historically Black fraternities and sororities, also known as the “Divine Nine.” These organizations were founded at a time when Black students were denied access to many campus activities and organizations, including historically white fraternities and sororities. Today, they continue to uphold traditions of academic excellence, cultural empowerment, service, leadership, and social justice.

The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) at the University of Maryland does not coordinate a council-wide or collaborative recruitment process. Instead, each MGC organization leads its own unique intake or recruitment process that reflects its values, traditions, and national guidelines. These processes are open to students of all cultures, backgrounds, and identities who are interested in joining a community grounded in cultural pride, academic excellence, leadership, and service.

Find Your Community at Maryland
Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of Maryland is home to over 50 organizations across four diverse councils. Each council offers unique opportunities to build lifelong friendships, develop as a leader, and make a lasting impact on campus and beyond. All students must attend an FSL 101 session prior to joining an organization.

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) at the University of Maryland facilitates the recruitment process for the university’s IFC fraternities. Recruitment is an opportunity for interested students to explore the values, traditions, and brotherhood that define the IFC community. With each chapter offering a unique experience, students are encouraged to learn more about the organizations that align with their values and goals.
